AKEL on the results of the EU Foreign Affairs Council
Still no will exists among many EU governments to impose sanctions on Turkey
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th July 2020, Nicosia
With the results of yesterday’s EU Foreign Affairs Council, the imposition of sanctions on Turkey has once again been postponed for another time. It was again reaffirmed that there still exists no will among many EU governments to impose such sanctions on Turkey that would correspond to the magnitude of its aggression and illegal actions.
AKEL expresses its concern about the course developments are taking. The European solidarity being expressed towards Cyprus and Greece in the face of Turkey’s aggressive actions continues to be primarily verbal and declarative. Practical and substantive solidarity that should curb Turkey’s aggression, de-escalate tensions and pave the way for a just solution to the problems do not appear on the horizon. At the same time, so long as our people’s most burning issue, that is the Cyprus problem, the occupation and partition of our country by Turkey, is absent from the discussions, its prospects are becoming distant.
In AKEL’s view, the government must make an objective assessment of the situation at an EU-level and of the effectiveness of its handlings so far. Above all, of course, the government must clarify in a specific and clear way its main goal, demands and expectations from all these processes.
