On UN Secretary General’s letters to Anastasiades and Akinci

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

Cooperation between GC and TC contributes decisively towards building the mutual trust that is demanded to realise our most important goal – the liberation and reunification of our homeland

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th May 2020, Nicosia

The UN Secretary-General’s letters to President Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci stress the need for co-operation between the two communities in the battle against the pandemic. The UN Secretary-General refers to the importance of communication within the Technical Committee on Health and the need to strengthen all bi-communal Technical Committees, as well as the aspiration – health conditions permitting – that the opening of the crossing points should be regulated.

AKEL had and still holds the view that cooperation between the two communities can contribute to tackling everyday problems, but also major challenges such as the current coronavirus pandemic, in the interest of all Cypriots. First and foremost, cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots contributes decisively towards building the mutual trust that is demanded to realise our most important goal which is the liberation and reunification of our homeland through the achievement of a solution.
