Government is using inaccuracies and lies on the issue of rents

Statement by the Head of the Economic Studies Bureau of AKEL Charis Polycarpou on the issue of rents

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th May 2020, Nicosia

The Anastasiades-DISY government is using inaccuracies and lies on the issue of rents, instead of taking on its responsibility in a very difficult period for the Cyprus economy.

Instead of the Minister of Finance claiming on state radio that “subsidy of rents cannot be done because this has not been done in any other country” it would be better if he were to request from his advisers the schemes that have been announced by other EU countries such as Sweden, Lithuania and Slovenia so that he can get a comprehensive and well-documented picture. These countries have elaborated schemes to subsidise and reduce rents.

Once again, we call on the government to at long last take this crucial issue seriously. In AKEL’s view, the issue can be addressed by pursuing a common approach, whereby the tenant, owner and the State will take on the financial burden that corresponds to them so that a problem affecting thousands of families and small and medium-sized enterprises can be solved.
