34 years since the Chernobyl accident

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25 April 2020, Nicosia

April 26th marks the 34th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. Every year on such a day we join our voices with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots and reiterate our opposition to the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey. This year, unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we do not have this opportunity, but we must remember and continue our struggles.

For years, AKEL has been sounding the alarm about the serious environmental consequences of the construction of a nuclear power plant just a few kilometers away from the coast of Kyrenia. Nuclear power has proved how dangerous it can become. The victims of Chernobyl and Fukushima remind us of this every day. An accident or a leak, apart from an environmental disaster, will endanger the lives of thousands of people in the wider Mediterranean region.

On this occasion, we reiterate our general position against the construction of nuclear power plants and the need for the gradual abolition of existing ones.
