AKEL demands measures for the economy and working people

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the coronavirus outbreak

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th March 2020, Nicosia

Obviously, what matters right now is the protection of people’s health. We reiterate our appeal to everyone to follow the instructions of the competent authorities which are based on the positions of the international and Cypriot scientific community to deal with the virus.

However, the government must at the same time reflect on what it is doing in relation to the consequences that exist and that will happen on the Cyprus economy, bearing in mind the situation the virus has created internationally, but also in Cyprus too. Our economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism and services, will be affected and it is already being affected. This will have a chain reaction effect on the entire spectrum and scope of the Cyprus economy.

The government must elaborate a comprehensive plan that will support the economy, but also jobs and working people who are also affected by this situation.

Specific groups of working people and professionals are the first to suffer the impact of the situation and measures that have been taken to address the virus. We are, for example, talking about professionals and workers working in the fields of culture and entertainment. The government must consider how it backs these groups. AKEL is at the disposal of the Government to make its own contribution to this effort by submitting specific ideas and proposals.
