The two leaders must stay focused and continue the effort for an agreement on the terms of reference for the resumption of substantive negotiations
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the letter of UN Secretary General’s envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th September 2019, Nicosia
According to what has been published about the content of the letter sent by the UN Secretary General’s envoy on the Cyprus problem Jane Hall Lute, to the two leaders, the consultations that took place during her recent presence in Cyprus have enabled serious steps forward to be taken and the desire for a new meeting is expressed.
Lute’s letter confirms that the United Nations wants to continue the effort for a resumption of substantive negotiations. This is extremely important, because otherwise we would have had a dramatic acceleration of negative developments.
Therefore despite Turkey’s ongoing provocative actions, the two leaders must stay focused and continue the effort for an agreement on the terms of reference for the resumption of substantive negotiations.
In the light of developments, the Greek Cypriot side must make clear in every direction its unwavering commitment to the resumption of negotiations from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana, on the basis of the 2014 Joint Declaration, the convergences that have been recorded and Framework of the UN Secretary General.
A lasting peace, security and cooperation can be guaranteed only by a solution that ends the occupation and reunites the country and the people within the framework of a bicommunal, bi-zonal federation with political equality, as set out in the relevant Resolutions of the UN.
