The deliberate distortion of AKEL’s positions won’t rescue DISY and the Presidency

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 23 July 2019, Nicosia

Since the Presidency and DISY either don’t read or want to understand AKEL’s positions, we again quote an excerpt from the statement AKEL issued today.

“What the Foreign Minister of Turkey says – perhaps to serve his own considerations – isn’t a criterion for AKEL to judge Mr. Anastasiades and his positions.

For some time evidence has been mounting that President Anastasiades has repeatedly discussed and sounded out foreign officials, diplomats, as well as Cypriot politicians and journalists about a two-state solution. Besides, these have been aired on television as well and been repeatedly written about in the press, with references to dates and specific persons.”

What the Presidency and DISY have drawn from this position is that AKEL is adopting Turkey’s rhetoric. They are evidently unable to give explanations to the Cypriot people about the deadlocks in their policies, which is precisely the reason why they are resorting to the deliberate distortion of AKEL’s positions. They fabricate positions and then answer them for themselves.

In any case, it is positive that – in the face of the deadlocks because of their regressions – the Presidency and DISY are now signaling their commitment to bizonal, bicommunal federation and to the Guterres Framework.
