9th August will be a critical day for Cyprus
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24 July 2019, Nicosia
9th August will be a critical day for Cyprus
The meeting between the two leaders will determine whether the current deadlock surrounding the Cyprus problem, which is fueling Turkey’s provocative actions in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone, can be broken.
The two leaders don’t have the luxury of failing or other delaying tactics.
If the meeting of 9th August were to fail, the convening of an Informal Conference, which in turn could lead towards a resumption of the negotiation procedure in the way the UN Secretary-General proposes, will not be at all easy.
AKEL urges President Anastasiades to demonstrate in practice the necessary political will to move things forward on the Cyprus problem. He should ensure irreversibly that the only basis of the solution is reunification based on bi-zonal, bicommunal federation with political equality of the two communities as described in the relevant UN resolutions. Furthermore, he should confirm his commitment towards the Framework of the Secretary General of the United Nations and the agreed convergences. That is precisely what the UN Secretary-General is asking for in order for him to proceed.
All the other tactics and strategies have not only failed, but have caused damage and brought new dangers to our country and struggle for a solution that will put an end to the occupation and reunite the country and the people.
