The President must brief the political forces on the full content of his letter to the UN Secretary General

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou on the President of the Republic’s letter to the UN Secretary General

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27 June 2019, Nicosia

Yesterday we had the revelation made by the Foreign Minister on a radio station that the President of the Republic had sent a letter to the UN Secretary General a few days ago asking for the resumption of negotiations.

We consider that the President of the Republic should – even belatedly – brief the political forces about the full content of the letter. We want to know exactly what the President is stating to the UN Secretary General with regards the resumption of negotiations. From time to time, the President of the Republic put forth various preconditions and terms for the resumption of negotiations, with which he essentially annulled all that the UN Secretary General is asking for a resumption of negotiations.

We have on numerous occasions reiterated the need that exists for a resumption of negotiations as the Secretary General of the United Nations sets out. That is to say, a resumption of negotiations from the point where they had remained, on the basis of the Guterres Framework, which includes six specific issues and the safeguarding of the convergences that have been achieved since 2008 and onwards. Of course, the resumption of the negotiations must be done on the precondition that Turkey will terminate its illegal activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus.
