The only thing the President manages to do is to remain even more exposed

Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides AKEL – Left – New Powers Parliamentary Representative

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13 February 2019, Nicosia

President Anastasiades must be extremely careful when casting doubts over the General Secretariat of the UN, fueling conspiracy scenarios around the Guterres framework on an issue indeed that has been clarified clearly at the Crans Montana Conference by the UN Secretary General himself, not to also mention former United Nations Special Adviser on Cyprus Mr. Eide’s public statements in an interview he gave a few days later. More specifically, it was clarified that the Guterres framework provides for the abolition of guarantees, intervention rights and the withdrawal of the occupying troops, the replacement of the guarantees with the mechanism for implementing the solution and, finally, the revision of the Treaty of Alliance, leaving for discussion whether there will be a revision clause or an automatic abolition clause for the contingents of the Greek Force in Cyprus (ELDYK) and Turkey’s corresponding force (TOURDYK). That’s how the UN Secretary General perceives the transformation of Cyprus into a normal state within the framework of the solution.

Unfortunately, Mr. Anastasiades with his actions isn’t correcting the bad image he gave with his references to the existence of two frameworks, namely June 30 and July 4 of 2017, resulting in Mr. Guterres himself refuting him in the Reports he submitted. On the contrary, the only thing he is managing to do is to worsen his position and credibility and remain even more exposed.
