AKEL on recent European Council meeting: The negative reality cannot be idealized for the purposes of Anastasiades’ election campaign
Statement by Yiorgos Loucaides, Parliamentary Spokesperson of AKEL-Left-New Forces Group
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21st October 2017, Nicosia
The Anastasiades election campaign is celebrating about supposed victories in Europe.
However, the picture remains tragic, given that at an intergovernmental and institutional level, as well as in yesterday’s European Council meeting, which Nicos Anastasiades attended, no one shares his narrative about the reasons for the collapse of the negotiation procedure on the Cyprus problem.
On the contrary, what has remained as the prevailing narrative on an international level is the one put forth by UN Secretary-General Mr. Guterres, who, in his report, not only exonerates Turkey, but also praises Ankara for its stand on the issue of security.
This negative reality cannot be idealized for the purposes of N. Anastasiades’ election campaign. Nor all the more so can it effectively protect us from any potential new fait accompli that seem to be coming back to the fore again because of Anastasiades’ disastrous handlings; handlings that had the upcoming elections and not to the future generations at heart; handlings aimed at being likeable to certain sections of the electorate rather than for the homeland; handlings that at decisive moments were moving within the framework of Nicolas Papadopoulos’ philosophy and tactics, that is to say the strategy that leads us directly to the finalization of partition.
