Japanese Communist Party pays official visit to Cyprus on AKEL’s invitation

At the invitation of AKEL, a high-level delegation of the Japanese Communist Party paid for the first time an official visit to Cyprus from 19th to 21st July. The delegation was headed by Yasuo Ogata, Vice Chairperson, Executive Committee Chairperson and Chairperson of the International Commission of the C.C. of Party, accompanied by Hiroshi Yonezawa, a member of the International Relations Department of the C.C. of the JCP.

The representatives of the Japanese Communist Party had official contacts and meetings with the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, the President of the House of Representatives, the Deputy General Director the Foreign Ministry, the General Secretary of the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO), the General Secretary of the Progressive Women’s Movement of POGO and Vice-President of the Women’s International Democratic Federation (FDIF), the President of the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), the Youth Organization EDON and the Board of the “Prometheus” Research Institute.

The Japanese Communist Party participates in both the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors of Japan. In recent years it has been constantly growing in strength, both on a local and national level. In the elections for the House of Councilors held in 2016 it won 14 seats out of 232 recording an increase of 3 seats and receiving 6,016,195 votes. Its growth is also linked to the promotion of its policies on environmental issues and its opposition to the country’s foreign and defence policy.
