Neither the UN, nor the EU apportion responsibilities on Turkey

Declaration by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 20th July 2017, Nicosia

President Anastasiades stated today that the International Community and the EU have begun to realize that the division of Cyprus is due to Turkey.

We cannot know from where the President formed this impression. What we are seeing is that neither the UN, nor the European Union are apportioning responsibilities on Turkey for the failure of the Conference in Switzerland. Quite the opposite is the case! The UN Secretary-General expressed his deep appreciation to the Turkish President for Turkey’s role in Switzerland.

Just the day before yesterday the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Mr. Espen Barth Eide said that the conference in Switzerland is the collective failure of all parties, letting Turkey off the hook of responsibilities and laying the responsibility on the two Cypriot sides for a continuation of the procedure.

Turkey bears the main responsibility for the failure of the Conference in Switzerland. The misguided handlings of the President in Switzerland, however, as well as the contradictions and regressions of his policy, particularly over the recent period, have enabled Turkey to remain immune to criticism and from being apportioned responsibilities.
