We need a Europe of the peoples, not of big capital
AKEL on EU Mediterranean countries Summit

AKEL welcomes the EU-Mediterranean Summit held on the Greek Prime Minister’s initiative in Athens.
The holding of the Summit was in effect imposed by the fact that the EU has to a great extent been alienated from its citizens, as a result of the neoliberal austerity policies being enforced by the ruling circles in it.
AKEL has no illusions about the results of the Summit. It notes however that the highlighting of the problems that are generated by the ruling EU policies, is a small step in the understanding of the need for radical changes in Europe that should serve the many and not the privileged few.
European citizens have need of a Europe of the peoples, not a Europe of big capital. They need a Europe that should operate based with consistency on the fundamental principles of democracy, the respect of the people’s sovereign will and serve peace, cooperation and solidarity in the world.
