The solution must abolish the anachronistic 1960 system of guarantees and unilateral right of intervention
Written statement by Stefanos Stephanou AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th September 2016, Nicosia
The issue of the guarantees was raised at the meeting of the Heads and Representatives of the parties in the House of Representatives, but was not discussed. Nonetheless, we strongly hold the view that the Cyprus problem and its various aspects is not and cannot be resolved by introducing laws. The Cyprus problem can be resolved through the negotiation procedure.
AKEL’s position on the issue of guarantees is clear and unequivocal. The solution of the Cyprus problem must abolish the anachronistic 1960 system of guarantees and the unilateral right of intervention.
The solution must exclude the possibility of any third party intervening in the internal affairs of Cyprus and provide for demilitarization.
