The government doesn’t seem to act preemptively, but already appears not to have the political will to do so

Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th June 2016, Nicosia

brexit eu intThe decision of the British people to leave the European Union and the consequences that will surface is an issue that concerns everyone.

Everybody is engaged with the Brexit issue. The only people who appear not to be so concerned are the government and ruling forces. Given that Britain is a particularly important country for Cyprus, the Cyprus government should already have done its preparatory work so as to be ready to tackle any consequences.

Instead, the contradictory and vague statements made by government officials convince us that the government and ruling forces neither before, but nor even now are coherently and concretely dealing with the issue.

Likewise, they don’t seem to be so concerned about the new developments stemming from the restoration of Turkey’s relations with Israel and its attempt to restore its relations with Russia.

Foreseeing and preventing developments are component and essential parts of any successful policy. Not only does the Anastasiades- DISY party government appear not to be acting preemptively, but it already seems not to have the political will to do so.

And this is bad for both our country and people.
