AKEL welcomes the decision by the leaders of the two communities to intensify the negotiations on the Cyprus problem. The favorable conjuncture for a solution of our political problem still exists and can and should be exploited. The next few months will determine the fate of the current negotiation procedure and therefore valuable time must not be lost.
The two leaders should focus on the pending core issues and make every effort to bridge differences, always with respect for the principles and the agreed framework of the solution. We believe that if the reaffirmation by both leaders of the commitment that we are not aiming neither at confederation nor at achieving a unitary state, but aiming to reach a bicommunal, bizonal federation is observed in practice, then the goal of the solution is feasible.
We are at a crossroads and for that reason the convening of the National Council is imperative, but also the respect of the body’s rules of procedure by everyone. We call on all political forces to rise to the occasion and focus on the supreme goal for a solution of the Cyprus problem that will end the partitionist status quo, liberate and reunite our country and people.
