Cabinet acts as a party rather than a state body
Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL Press Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 5th November 2015, Nicosia
It’s true that the exaggerations in the attempt to pay tribute to deceased Presidents of the Republic are unfortunately the rule in Cyprus.
However, even exaggerations should have their limits.
If the decision is taken to give the name of a personality to the main airport of a country, what usually follows is that a political or historical figure is chosen who is identified with this country and who is generally or universally accepted as such by its people.
We regret to point out that Glafcos Clerides, whom we respect in spite of the many and great differences that separated us, is in fact the historical leader of the Right in Cyprus. However he is not the historic leader of Cyprus enjoying the general acceptance by the people.
We therefore consider as improper the decision taken today by the Ministerial Council, which unilaterally – without any consultation or even briefing of the political forces – clearly acted as a narrow party and not as a state body.
