If the negotiations are to have a successful outcome or not this, will be judged at the negotiating table

Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL Political Bureau member

AKEL C.C Press Office, 13th October 2015, Nicosia

cpr negotiations eideThe disagreements and difficulties that have arisen in the negotiations were to be expected. As AKEL, we were always warning that the negotiations would not be easy which is why we were also stressing the need for proper and precise preparation by our side to address the difficulties.

The existence of disagreements does not necessarily mean a failure of the negotiations as well. Whether the negotiations are to have a successful outcome or not this will be judged at the negotiating table to which we must engage with seriousness and realism, based on the principles of the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Today the property issue is being discussed at the negotiations, a difficult and complex issue, on which we always faced difficulties. Whether we’ll arrive at the discussion of the issues on which Turkey is accountable or at a new impasse will depend on the progress registered with regards the property issue.

Another path other than the negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus problem does not exist. Those forces and circles which only point to the difficulties and problems, taking the failure of the negotiations for granted according to their favorite custom, beyond their slogans and vague declarations, must finally put forward their own specific and feasible proposals.
