EU shedding hypocritical tears about the plight of the refugees

Statement of Eleni Mavrou, Political Bureau member

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th October 2015, Nicosia

Tragedy of immigration to Europe Middle East EyeNew, even tougher measures to deal with the immigration and refugee crisis in Europe were approved the day before yesterday by the Interior Ministers of the European Union.

The European Union is officially now focusing on strengthening the guarding of its external borders, the creation of camps and speeding up mass deportations.

Of particular concern is the statement made by the current President of the Council Jean Asselborn that within the context of the uniform system of guarding the Union’s borders, EU member states “will surrender sovereign rights” in favour of a new procedure under Frontex.

AKEL rejects the logic of military solutions to immigration and the strengthening of the coercive repressive mechanisms for border controls, particularly against the sovereignty of member states.

We point out that the relocations and other measures that are being discussed are extremely inadequate in view of the waves of refugees that are expected to continue and grow in the coming period.

Finally, AKEL considers that the European Union instead of shedding hypocritical tears about the plight of the refugees must admit that the refugee crisis is a result of the brutal wars and invasions in the Middle East, to which it has colluded, if not led the way in waging, and to at last support positions based on International Law in relation to the pending problems of the region.
