AKEL denounces Turkey’s attacks against struggling Kurds and progressive movements
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th July 2015, Nicosia
On the 24th July Turkey unleashed fierce air strikes on positions against positions of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), but also against civilians in Iraq. At the same time, the Turkish government proceeded to mass arrests of hundreds of members of Kurdish organizations and progressive movements in the country.
Today NATO is meeting at the request of Ankara, in order to consult on the pretext of “threats to Turkey’s national security”.
Ankara’s active participation in the international “anti-terrorist coalition” against the “Islamic State” organization is the pretext for its savage offensive against the struggling Kurds and the further undermining of Syria’s territorial integrity. The NATO plans for the total reorganization of the Middle East are being written and re-written with the blood of the peoples.
How is it possible that the international community does not see the hypocrisy of Turkey, which is invoking International Law as and whenever this suits it? Isn’t it by now abundantly clear that the activity of the “Islamic State” has become a tool in the hands of the US and its allies, so as to fulfill their broader plans in the region? Do the Cyprus government and the pro-NATO circles in Cyprus acknowledge the role this alliance is playing in the promotion of Turkey’s designs in our region?
AKEL denounces Turkey’s attacks and the cover the US and NATO gives to them. We express our solidarity with the struggling Kurds who are fighting selflessly against the inhuman obscurantism of “Islamic State”. At the same time, AKEL reiterates the demand for the removal of PKK from the EU list of “terrorist organizations”, which would significantly contribute towards the peace process.
