Letter to Mikis Theodorakis by AKEL General Secretary

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou has sent a letter to Mikis Theodorakis with the occasion of his 90th birthday. The main part of his letter follows:
“Today is a landmark and important day for you, your family and your friends, but also for the whole of progressive humanity.
Celebrating with you today are fighters all over the world; fighters of peace, freedom, democracy and equality. The people of arts and letters are also celebrating today with you.
We are celebrating in a period when in Europe itself the values, rights and ideals are being brutally suppressed; in a period of imperialist aggression around the world, when Greece and Cyprus are suffering under the yoke of the Memoranda imposed by the ruling forces in Europe today and at a time when the occupation and partition of Cyprus is continuing. Therefore at this particular juncture, your struggles and creative work continue to be a source of inspiration, creativity and struggle.
Thank you not only on behalf of AKEL, but also on behalf of the Cypriot people for all that you have offered through its struggles.
We wish you many more years, creative years full of new struggles until the sun of justice and until the swallow and the precious Spring will prevail in Greece, Cyprus, Europe and throughout the whole world – until the bells of the Resurrection will ring.”
