Imperialist interventions responsible for spread of terrorism, fundamentalism and instability
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 21st July 2015, Nicosia
AKEL denounces yesterday’s murderous attack in the city of Suruc in Turkey which has caused the death of at least 28 people with more than 100 people injured.
The suicide terrorist attack resulted mainly in young victims of the Socialist Youth Associations Federation (SGDF) who were preparing a solidarity mission for the reconstruction of the demolished city of Kobane. It seems that the attack was carried out by jihadists of the “Islamic State” organization as an act of revenge for their recent defeat in the battle to control Kobane. The Turkish government is reported to share some of the responsibility since it hindered the mission’s travel to Kobane.
AKEL has repeatedly pointed out that the expansion of the “Islamic State” is the result of the imperialist designs in the region. It is the result of the strengthening of the Islamists by the West to overthrow governments and to control their energy routes and sources in the region. Furthermore, the West is directly responsible for the conflicts and wars that have provoked the instability prevailing in Iraq, Syria and Libya, which has represented a fertile ground for jihadists to establish themselves in the region.
The dangers from the spreading of the extremist activity of the «Islamic State» organization today are a threat that must be combated through mass struggles and solidarity of the peoples of the region and the world. However it is the causes recycling terrorism and fundamentalism that first and above all must be combated.
With this opportunity, AKEL welcomes the initiative taken by progressive Turkish Cypriot parties and movements to organize, today at 7:30 p.m. in occupied Nicosia a protest meeting on the murderous attack and the position taken by the Turkish government on the issue.
