Turkey must change positions to translate optimism into a real perspective

Statement of Aristos Damianou, member of AKEL Political Bureau

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18th July 2015, Nicosia

cpr famagusta green lineThe visit of the President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker to Cyprus took place at a time when negotiations on the Cyprus problem are underway, but also the discussions and justified critical approaches about the EU policies in the field of the economy are reaching a climax.

Without doubt the assumption by Mr. Akinci of the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community is creating optimism. However, we know very well that the key to the solution lies in Ankara. Consequently to translate optimism into a real perspective, practical proof that Turkey has shifted from its long-standing unacceptable positions are needed. Unfortunately, the excessive optimism that certain circles are cultivating is not justified by developments themselves. In keeping intact our strong desire for a solution, we must remain down to earth and cautious.

The European Union must turn the positive rhetoric about the need to find a solution into exerting its influence on Turkey, which Mr. Juncker correctly said must comply with its obligations on the Cyprus problem in the EU. Of course, for AKEL the verbal proclamation that “the solution should be consistent with European principles and values” is not sufficient. It must be safeguarded that the reunified federal state will be functional, respect human rights and fundamental freedoms of citizens. We expect that Mr. Juncker, the European Union in general, will act within this framework, so that the solution is made in line with European principles and values and not for these to be adjusted to any possible solution.

On the issues relating to the economy, as expected, the President of the European Commission reiterated established EU policies and of course he credited a government that is fully in line with the Memoranda, the Troika and austerity. We note the exposure of the Government with the position reiterated by Mr. Juncker that the decisions of March 2013 concerning the haircut on bank deposits were devastating, as well as the acknowledgement that the Cypriot people has paid a high price for the decisions that were taken.
