Fundamental prerequisite remains what each side submits at the negotiating table
Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL Press Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24th May 2015, Nicosia
AKEL reiterates its belief that the creation and maintaining of a positive climate between the two communities is a particularly useful parameter in the quest for a solution of the Cyprus problem. Anything that contributes in this direction, together with the promotion of Confidence Building Measures, is to be welcomed and judged as beneficial as long as it moves within the framework of international legality.
The cultivation of a positive climate and keeping the hope for a solution and reunification alive, although constituting a supportive and necessary condition for the prospect of a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem, is of course not enough, nor is it the fundamental prerequisite for achieving the goal of liberation from the occupation, a prerequisite which was and remains the stance and positions that each side submits at the negotiating table. That is precisely where the interest and attention of our side must focus on, with the other initiatives having an auxiliary and complementary character.
However the stand of certain circles and forces is incomprehensible or better still fully understandable is their concern to kill every hope in the bud and nullify anything that creates a positive atmosphere, hiding behind the correct conclusion that everything, especially Turkey’s stand, will be judged at the negotiating table.
