AKEL denounces government’s new pardoning of coup d’ etat
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th October 2014, Nicosia
AKEL considers yesterday’s statements made by the Minister of Interior Socrates Hasikos in relation to the honouring of the attackers against democracy aiming at the murder and execution of the coup d’état to overthrow the late President Makarios as unacceptable.
We do not of course expect any kind of self-criticism from Mr. Hasikos concerning his own stance during the coup d’état and about the countless witnesses testifying that he was seen moving around with a Kalashnikov machine gun on the day of the coup on the 15th July 1974. Rather the Kalashnikov machine gun was a children’s or more accurately a school pupil’s toy, given that in any case a coup d’état did on the one hand take place, but no putschists exist. Consequently, we must not expect either remorse, neither guilt, not even a mere acknowledgment of a mistake from those responsible for the worst catastrophe in our country’s modern history. In which case Mr. Hasikos can have his consciousness clear and attempt with a provocative audacity to equate those who sacrificed their lives fighting defending Democracy with those who those who turned their guns attacking democracy to dissolve it.
