AKEL will host a Regional Meeting on the Palestinian Problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 30th August 2014, Nicosia
AKEL welcomes the achievement of an indefinite ceasefire that was agreed in Cairo, Egypt, between Israel and the Palestinian leadership. The war which began from the attacks waged by Israeli troops has resulted in 2,200 dead and thousands of injured and homeless, while according to the United Nations, three quarters of Palestinians killed are civilians. The lessons for the future are many. Life in Gaza has almost completely been flattened and the delivery of humanitarian assistance is urgent, as well as the reconstruction of the destroyed and ruined city.
The common future of both peoples can only be built through a solution that will establish a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, lifting the faits accomplis created by the colonisation in the occupied Palestinian territories and a state alongside the state of Israel. AKEL announces that it intends to host soon a regional meeting of the parties of the region on the Palestinian problem.
