Statement of Neoclis Sylikiotis, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL, MEP
AKEL C.C. Press Office
“In recent years, a debate is underway about the need for a shift towards the real economy, both for the creation of new jobs and for development to be promoted. However no effective steps have been promoted in this direction. In particular, Cyprus and Greece plagued by recession due to the economic crisis in recent years, but also the South in general, is in a process of de-industrialisation. On the contrary, measures are constantly being implemented to support the banking sector and financial institutions. This has to change. Immediate measures must be promoted to support industry and SME’s and create new jobs.” This is what AKEL MEP Neoclis Sylikiotis, and Coordinator of the European United Left-Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) stated today in the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) of the European Parliament.
AKEL MEP Neoclis Sylikiotis also recalled that in 2012 a discussion had started in the Council and the Commission on state aid. He stressed that in order for the EU to compete successfully with other countries in sector of industry it should seriously look at the issue of state aid to promote it to provide assistance to the Member States.
The above statements were made in the session of the Committee on Energy, Industry and Research, during the discussion of the study prepared by the Policy Department A: Economic and Scientific Policy for ITRE entitled “How can European industry contribute to the development and strengthening of European competitiveness?”
