Eroglu must prove in practice he really is seeking a solution

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, Spokesperson of the C.C. of AKEL,

22nd April 2014, Nicosia

The Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Eroglu is unfortunately repeating himself. On the one hand with his statements in New York he is trying to present himself as seeking a solution within 2014, whilst at the same time as ready to make a constructive contribution at the negotiating table in order to make this goal feasible. On the other hand, however, he states without any hesitation that the issue of settlers does not even exist, given that the settlers as “citizens of TRNC” (Note: the self-styled pseudo-state of the so-called “TRNC” in the occupied areas recognised only by the occupying power itself, Turkey) will all remain on the island with the achievement of a solution.

Mr. Eroglu must finally abandon the public relations games and prove in practice, with the positions and proposals of the Turkish Cypriot side at the negotiating table that he is genuinely seeking the solution of the Cyprus problem and not the perpetuation of the status quo and the upgrading of the pseudo-state. The powerful forces of the world must encourage Mr. Eroglu towards this end, if they are really interested in seeing the current procedure of the negotiations arrive at an agreed solution.
