Working people’s salaries are falling, while profits are soaring

Statement of Haris Polycarpou, member of the C.C. of AKEL

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd October 2015, Nicosia

statAccording to the recent figures released by the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus on wages it appears that neither numbers, nor people are prospering in Cyprus today.

For the 10th consecutive Quarter working people’s salaries are falling. The same is not true with regards the profits recorded by enterprises which maintain and indeed are increasing their share of the Cyprus economy’s pie.

Consequently, the current economic policy being implemented by the Government has one clear goal: to shift the burden of the crisis on the many and leave unaffected profits that end up in the pockets of the privileged minority. Through the policies they have pursued and will continue to follow, they have cut salaries and pensions, downgraded public health and are continuing to dismantle the welfare state.

So long as the philosophy of their policy remains the same, the “success story” they want to portray will record the same negative results for society.
