It is now quite clear that Cyprus is linked to illegal surveillance/wiretapping spyware, following yesterday’s debate on the issue in the European Parliament, AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou said.

AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou, Vice-Chairman of the special committee set up on the illegal spyware, called on the President of the Republic to give a clear answer whether Cyprus bought and used such surveillance spyware and whether police officers other than the Cypriot Central Intelligence Agency (KYP) were trained to use it. Giorgos Georgiou also stressed that the Attorney General must at long last to begin an investigation into the matter.

Giorgos Georgiou also said that on 8 September Thanasis Koukakis, the Greek journalist who was being monitored, will go to the European Parliament for a hearing. He added that a special team will be sent to Greece to investigate the issue, noting that the Liberals have suggested that there should be double mission so that the case of Cyprus can also be investigated.
