Why PEGA’s Vice-President is exempting himself from its contacts in Cyprus

I have exempted myself by proposing my GUE colleague Stelios Kouloglou, PEGA Vice-president and AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou told ‘ACTIVE’, explaining that it is better that way so that an unhindered and unaffected investigation can be carried out by PEGA leading members who will be in Cyprus.
They know a lot about what is happening in Cyprus, as well as whether Cyprus is linked to the wiretapping and surveillance scandal in Greece, and the PEGA Committee itself considered that there is a reason to carry out a visit to Cyprus as well, said AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou.
In Cyprus, Giorgos Georgiou added, the PEGA Committee of Inquiry will look for more evidence about the black spy van, whose owners were acquitted. They will also ask for the report of Elias Stefanou if they are not satisfied with his answers, as well as check if there is an adequate legal framework in Cyprus for the presence, production and export of these spy software.
- Giorgiou described the software in question as “diabolical” because, as he explained, “they can listen and watch you, monitor what you do, where you are, what you shop for on the internet, what you read, who you talk to, even your personal moments”.
The AKEL MEP also noted that the PEGA Committee will seek to find out whether there are such companies in Cyprus that produce and export these software.
