What matters in politics is what is done at the relevant time
Statement by Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 4th June 2016, Nicosia
What matters in politics is what is done at the relevant time and not what is proclaimed afterwards. What citizens ascertained was that the President of the Republic intervened in the procedure to elect the President of the legislative body violating the principle of the separation of powers,
The President’s statements that “there are those who are preferred and those who are sidelined in parliament” do not change the substance of the matter as it developed due to the handling made by the government and ruling forces. According to these forces, there are those who are preferred and those who are sidelined.
The government and ruling forces, despite their declarations on the election of the President of the House that he should follow and support the same policy as the President of the Republic of Cyprus, eventually voted for and elected a politician who supports completely different policies than their own. It is obvious that petty considerations prevailed in their decision.
The election of the President of the House of Representatives was a test for all political forces. Citizens have realized which political forces pursued the logic of bargaining and of serving political and electoral considerations and which forces acted ethically and far from any give and take process.
AKEL remained consistent to what it had been declaring from the very beginning. It didn’t follow the logic of horse-trading. It contacted parties, held discussions with them, determined their intentions and moods and subsequently took its decisions with transparency. And it remained consistent to these positions until the end.
