We want to continue the effort we began a few months ago to bring real change in the country
Statement by the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL A. Kyprianou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28th January 2018, Nicosia
We express our gratitude to the tens of thousands of voters of AKEL, but also to those from other non-attached or political spectrums, who put their trust in and voted for Stavros Malas. We backed a candidacy with very clear characteristics that the Cypriot people rewarded today, paving the way to a real and creative change. Together, but also with others who did not vote for Stavros Malas, we want to continue the effort we began a few months ago to bring real change in the country.
To achieve this goal, we need to rally all those forces and circles who want and are seeking real change in our country; who are seeking with consistency a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the agreed principles in order to achieve a solution that will terminate the Turkish occupation, the colonization of the occupied areas and the possibility of intervention in our internal affairs, a solution that will liberate and reunite our people.
We want and are seeking real change to bring the economy back on its feet in a way that will be based on solid foundations so that we can achieve growth for all and a fair distribution of the wealth produced.
We want and are seeking real change to rebuild the welfare state, the public health and education systems; to provide support to the common people, the middle strata and the working people; to fight and stamp out corruption and interwoven interests; to create the preconditions for culture to flourish again and to promote respect for the environment, for meritocracy, transparency and progressive reforms to be implemented in practice.
We want and are seeking real change το build a new relationship between the state and citizens; a relationship based on sincerity, seriousness and credibility without a lot of slogans and promises, but with a lot of work for our society, economy and country.
These goals, which are the cornerstone of Stavros Malas’ Program of Governance, meet the aspirations of society, the overwhelming majority of our people.
The outcome of the 1st Round of the 2018 presidential elections proves that the majority of citizens wants to see the country to rid itself from the presidency of N. Anastasiades and a change in the administration of the country. It demonstrates that change can be achieved if we all rally and unite our forces; if we all remain consistent to what we have proclaimed throughout the duration of the election campaign: that Cyprus can and must change direction, that it can and must forward. Stavros Malas believes in unity, he has credibility, is a moderate and has the ability to synthesize different views.
We are confident that our future unites us in the common goal of achieving change. We are convinced that the Program of Governance of Stavros Malas provides the solid basis around which both citizens and political forces which disagree with the government of N. Anastasiades can support his candidacy. As AKEL we will contribute to this goal.
I would like to end by thanking the thousands of militants and members of AKEL, but also others forces who worked hard to achieve this positive result. This hard work must continue until next Sunday to fulfill our goal.
