We shape our future… – Article by Kostantinos Christoforou, member of the Secretariat of the AKEL Nicosia-Kyrenia District Committee

Saturday 12 November 2022, “Haravgi” newspaper

We are at a historic turning point for the future of our country, a turning point that has to do with the future of the country, our future and the future of future generations. We each have a responsibility for the future of this country and this responsibility is focused on who we elect tomorrow to the highest office of the Republic of Cyprus.

A Republic of Cyprus that is in danger of being permanently partitioned, a Republic of Cyprus whose citizens are in danger of not being able to make ends meet because of the economic situation and a Republic of Cyprus that is in danger of sinking into the mire of corruption and drowning in the disastrous situation certain forces and circles have plunged us into. We therefore have an appointment with history.

It is up to us to decide what course our long-suffering island will take, because we are the ones who elect the next president at the helm. So we have before us numerous choices of presidential candidates, but we have only two options that have a chance of being elected. The first option is Averof-Christodoulides and the second is Andreas Mavroyiannis.

The Averof-Christodoulides option means an endorsement of the 10-year DISY-Anastasiades government, it means a continuation of the uncertainty surrounding the Cyprus problem that is reaching the point of permanent partition, it means a government that thinks of the privileged few, a government that will stand up to corruption, a government that is socially insensitive to the many and varied problems its citizens are facing.

The choice of Andreas Mavroyiannis means that as a people we want to change things and that we really want to reunite our country. It is a choice that can give the people hope for a better tomorrow, the right for young people to dream of a better Cyprus, a Cyprus of merit, with quality jobs, with dignified wages, with a vision of living a quality life in the place where they were born.

So the bottom line is what we, the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, want in 2023. Do we want to continue with the neoliberal Right in power? And let me remind you that a candidate must also be judged on his or her ideological background and the parties that support him or her, because the ruling DISY party has served and will continue to serve the interests of big capital, the interests of the few and the rich. That is what it has done, that is what it is doing and that is what it will continue to do if we give it the right by voting for Averof-Christodoulides.

So let us not be smarter than previous generations, because at least they knew who represented their class.

Andreas Mavroyiannis is a moderate politician, a diplomat, who until recently was a working man, with no business, no offshore companies or law firms, a humanitarian with realistic proposals for the many, and that is what makes his candidacy necessary at this moment for the country, because only if all the people prosper will we have a future as Cyprus and as Cypriots.

The future is therefore decided by us, the voters. It is we who decide which Cyprus we want. On Sunday 5 February 2023 we will be in a screen with a pen, a ballot paper and our conscience. Vote correctly!
