Turkish Foreign Minister’s sounding out about a possible visit of AKEL General Secretary to Turkey

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 4th January 2016, Nicosia

cavusglu cpr Reply of the Press spokesman of the C.C. of AKEL to a Cyprus News Agency journalist’s question whether there has been a sounding out on the part of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mr. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu about a possible visit of the General Secretary the C.C. of AKEL Andros Kyprianou to Turkey:

“I can confirm that indeed there has been a sounding out on the part of Mr. Çavuşoğlu whether such an invitation could be accepted and I want to make it clear that on our part there has been a positive response to the sounding out, as to whether we would wish to have meetings with the Turkish official or with other officials of the Turkish government.

We believe such a development is imperative; it will be useful and will give AKEL the possibility to set out its long-standing positions and put forth issues which our side, the Greek Cypriot side has raised in relation to the Cyprus problem.

At the same time it is obvious that this invitation has come about as a result of the fact that AKEL had and does play a decisive role in developments surrounding the Cyprus problem”.
