The way they wiretap phones is frightening

The possibility of his own telephone conversations being tapped will be investigated by AKEL MEP and Vice-president of the European Parliament’s PEGA Committee of Inquiry into the wiretapping and communications interception scandal, Giorgos Georgiou.
Speaking on Tuesday on ‘Astra’ radio and asked to comment on whether he had any indication that he too was being monitored because of his involvement in the investigation of the scandal, he replied, “What can I say – That I’m sure?”
G.Georgiou also added that he will go to a specialised laboratory in Brussels or Strasbourg next week and will hand over his mobile phone again to see if he himself is under surveillance.
The AKEL MEP noted characteristically that it is frightening the way phones are tapped and everything about anyone is monitored. Furthermore, he stressed that the government in Cyprus must stop burying its head in the sand and work with the political parties and civil society to introduce a concrete security framework.
When the delegation of European officials arrives in Cyprus, the AKEL MEP pointed out, the government spokesman will not be able to tell them that there is no surveillance since they are holding evidence and files that show that there is indeed an issue.
- As the newspaper “Haravgi” wrote on Monday, the European Parliament’s PEGA Investigative Committee will be in Cyprus the first weekend of November, during which it will meet with a delegation of the Cypriot Parliament, while on November 3 it will go to Greece.
