The time has now come for the practical recognition of the profession and service of health professionals and workers

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanou on the staffing of public hospitals

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd June 2020, Nicosia

The government and state health services (OKYPY) must listen to the appeals issued for the staffing of public hospitals with nursing staff.

Pledges were made even by President Anastasiades to nurses for the timely and adequate staffing of hospitals with nursing staff; pledges that evidently aren’t being fulfilled. OKYPY and the relevant Ministries bear grave responsibilities for the delay being observed and for braking their pledges on the issue of staffing.

AKEL calls on OKYPY and every competent authority to assume their responsibilities and respond to their mission, which is of crucial importance for the implementation of the National Health Scheme (NHS) and for the public health system. The big step that has been taken with the beginning of the second phase of the NHS demands drastic decisions to be taken by the State so that our country’s public hospitals are reconstructed.

In the critical days of the pandemic, everyone was expressing their recognition and appreciation for the role nurses play. However, the time has now come for the practical recognition of the profession and service of health professionals and workers.
