With the participation of dozens of attendees, an event was held yesterday in Brussels to present the AKEL-Left Alliance-Social Alliance candidates for the forthcoming European elections. The keynote speaker at the event was AKEL Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loukaides, who pointed out the importance of a mass participation in the voting procedure, but also what is crucially at stake of the elections.
As an AKEL-Left-Social Alliance, he stressed, which envisages gender equality and has cultural and environmental sensitivities, we are addressing progressive people and the broader spectrum of the Left, but also all citizens.
“We have a choice between strengthening social equality, social and labour rights or to pursue policies that decimate the middle class and serve the interests of the elites. A choice between the exorbitant profits of the banks or taxing them,” G.Loukaides said.
He also sent a message to the Turkish Cypriot community, noting that “we ask again for the trust of Turkish Cypriots, so that together we can build the common future of the Cypriot people as a whole”. G.Loukaides underlined that strengthening the Left will send the right messages to Europe about the course we want to follow on the Cyprus problem too.
Loukaides pointed out that we have another challenge us: To choose the Europe of peace, of cooperation, the respect of international law, or the Europe of double standards policies, of deeper dependence on NATO and the US, but also of the further militarization of the European Union.
Referring to the Palestinian issue, the AKEL Parliamentary Representative underlined that AKEL from the very first moment denounced the atrocities committed by Hamas, but did not erase the history of previous decades and the systematic violation of human rights by the State of Israel against the Palestinian people.
The event, which was attended by Cypriots who live and work in Brussels, was addressed by the European Parliamentary candidates of AKEL-Left-Social Alliance.
