The reports alleging the beating of young Turkish Cypriots demand an immediate investigation be carried out
22 February 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Reports alleging the beating of eight young Turkish Cypriots in Platania last Sunday are worrying. Even more worrying is that there may have been chauvinist motives behind it, according to the same reports.
Although there has been no official complaint filed and no confirmation of the incidents, due to the political importance of the issue, AKEL believes that the case needs a prompt and effective investigation to be carried out by the state and if there are any responsibilities they should be fully attributed. We recall that the actions of a minority of chauvinists have historically caused irreparable damage to the Cypriot people as a whole.
It is a fact that many Turkish Cypriots, for various reasons, are afraid to report similar incidents to the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus. To this end, the state could take relevant measures to prevent any incidents, some of which reproduce bigotry and nationalism.
AKEL has on numerous occasions proposed relevant measures in this direction.
