The outcome of the voting procedure for a new Turkish Cypriot leader opens a window of hope for the Cyprus problem

The outcome of the voting procedure in the occupied territories for a new Turkish Cypriot leader opens a window of hope and prospect for the Cyprus problem.
The Turkish Cypriot community sent out a strong message against Turkey’s suffocating embrace, a message in favor of federation and against the “two state solution” proposed by the partitionist Ersin Tatar. Turkish Cypriots rejected the Turkish government’s overt and authoritarian interventions in favor of Tatar and his agenda. At the same time, the result also reflected the strong social reaction against the socio-economic policies that are being implemented in the occupied areas, which are putting dramatic pressure on the Turkish Cypriot community’s standard of living.
AKEL believes that this development, combined with the UN Secretary-General’s expressed readiness for a new effort on the Cyprus problem, focusing on the substance and not just on the Confidence Building Measures, creates preconditions for ending the long-standing impasse and putting the Cyprus issue back on track for negotiations on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, for reunification, and peace. For AKEL, the immediate goal must be for everyone to continue the talks from where they left off in 2017 at Crans-Montana, with all the convergences secured and negotiations based on the Guterres Framework for the remaining issues.
AKEL sends out a message for continuing the common struggle of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for a free, independent, reunited, and peaceful Cyprus, free from any barbed wires, foreign armies, and guardians. For a Cyprus that is the common homeland of all its children.
