The NHS’ implementation is a social necessity, but also a demand of society

Statement by AKEL-Left-New Forces Parliamentary Representative Yiorgos Loucaides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18 October 2018, Nicosia

AKEL expresses its concern about the danger of the National Health Scheme  (NHS) being undermined by those forces and circles associated with powerful economic interests and who right now appear to be seeking to exert their influence on private doctors not to agree contracts with the NHS. Furthermore, AKEL continues to express its anxiety about the state of the public health system and the need for its upgrading and reorganization, given that this goal remains directly linked to the smooth operation of the NHS.

The implementation of the NHS is a social necessity, but at the same time also a demand of Cypriot society. AKEL will do everything in its power, together with the informal social alliance that has been forged for this purpose, struggling always until the end to keep the NHS on track so that it can finally be realized in practice. Those forces who, through their actions and omissions, continue to seek or contribute towards the undermining of the NHS should know for sure that they will find society confronting them.
