The Minister of Agriculture must either resign or be sacked

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

27 February 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Minister of Agriculture must either resign or be sacked. The chain of failures and incompetence across her entire field of responsibility is damaging the country.

Last summer, the fires that were raging in the mountainous region of Limassol caused the greatest fire disaster in the history of the state, but no one took responsibility for the tragic handling of the situation. The water problem has not only not been solved, but is getting worse by the day, as neither planning nor projects have been carried out, resulting in imminent water cuts. Now, foot-and-mouth disease has developed into a crisis and the country’s livestock industry is suffering an unprecedented blow because no timely measures were taken.

Nevertheless, every time the Minister—and the government—not only did not take any responsibility, but also try to shift the blame onto everyone else. Like now, when she is blaming livestock farmers, the very people who are currently losing their livelihoods and the hard work of a lifetime.

We wonder what else needs to happen for the Minister but also President Christodoulides to realize that she must be removed from her position.
