AKEL condemns the attack by the US and Israel against Iran
28 February 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The so-called pre-emptive strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
In a region that is already up in flames, the new attack waged by the US and Israel could lead to further regional unrest, to the detriment of peace and security for the peoples of the region.
AKEL condemns the attack, which follows a series of violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. Moreover, peaceful resolution and diplomacy were a feasible scenario, which was provocatively ignored.
The Trump-Netanyahu duo’s invocation of sensitivities about democracy in Iran is patently hypocritical. The future and course of the country is a matter for its people to decide and not for foreign states. After all, similar invasions under similar pretexts have been carried out in the past, with disastrous consequences for all the states and peoples of our neighbourhood.
We call on the Christodoulides government to take a principled stance in this case, in line with international law and the Charter of the United Nations, as we, the people, also demand in the case of the semi-occupied Cyprus.
