AKEL on the Finding of the Kalogirou Probe Committee
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th December 2020, Nicosia
The Finding of the Kalogirou Probe Committee does not satisfy the universal demand of Cypriot society for a full investigation and for responsibilities to be apportioned on those who organized, set up and exploited the industry of selling golden passports.
The main problem with the Kalogirou Committee is with all that it did not probe. This Committee, which was appointed by the Anastasiades government after the international outcry against Cyprus, was instructed to examine all the citizenships granted during the period 2008-2018. In the end, it examined 12 cases involving about 40 people. However, it should be pointed out that the Anastasiades government issued more than 6,000 Cypriot passports.
Of course the key issue that arises surrounding the golden passport industry does not need investigations and commissions to be ascertained. It is the glaring and self-evident conflict of interest concerning the President of the Republic himself and numerous members of his government. The Committee did not deal with the hundreds of citizenship applications that were submitted by law firms associated with Nikos Anastasiades and members of his government.
No investigation and no probe committee of inquiry can find out the political morality and political sensitivity that Mr. Anastasiades and government officials should have had, who, even at this very moment, are refusing to take on even the slightest responsibility and apologize to the people.
