The government’s positions are dangerous for the economy’s course
Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 13th October 2014, Nicosia
We agree with President Anastasiades that everyone, without execption, should rise to the occasion and that we should assume our responsibilities with regrads the situation on the economy. However, the obvious question remains: to whom should we assume our responsibilities and what interests should we seek to serve?
Is the worst Memorandum that has ever been imposed on a Eurozone country serving the interests of our people, Cypriot society and workers or rather the interests of our lenders, of Merkel, Schaeuble and the predators who are preparing for a frenzy of speculation?
Is it true that we really are progressing “magnificantly” as President Anastasiades said yesterday, within the framework of the new -according to him – economic miracle that we are experiencing since March 2013 onwards or is the state of the Cyprus economy, ordinary households and SME’s since then going continuously from bad to worse?
Is it a miracle and a magnificent achievemnt that we are the European champions in the increase in public debt by 24.6% in 2013 and that we have already reached 122%, with the forecast that it will surpass 126%?
Is it really an achievement that we remain the champions in Europe in the growth of recession, in cuts in wages, fall in employment, in the increase in long-term unemployment, the amount of non-performing loans and high interest rates, in the lowest expenditure on social benefits and Health?
Unfortunately, the answer is damning for the government and ruling forces, a fact which proves again that either they really are out of touch with reality which the Cypriot people is experiencing or either they serve interests alien to our people’s well-intentioned interests , or all of the above together.
In each case, the government’s position is dangerous for the economy’s course, since their assessment that “we are doing magnificantly” doesn’t allow them to understand that a change course is needed and that they should accept the lowest common denominator of all the parties of the opposition, which demand resistance to the Memorandum’s provisions and renegotiation for the benefit of the Cyprus economy and people.
