The government unable to pursue an immigration policy respecting human rights stemming from international law
Marina Stavrinou, Head of AKEL’s Migration Policy Bureau of AKEL on the Minister of Interior’s statements on the government’s immigration policy
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25 January 2020, Nicosia
Once again, we hear statements from the Minister of the Interior promoting xenophobia and racism. The statements are an expression of the government’s inability to pursue an immigration policy that respects human rights stemming from international law.
Of particular concern are the steps the government is preparing to take in order to prevent asylum applications. These government measures violate our obligations as a state, but also the very definition of a refugee and his/her right to apply for asylum. The Minister did not refer to any measures for a speedy examination of applications by the Asylum Service resulting in a long delay of more than 2-3 years.
On such an important and pressing issue, as he himself said, the government has not sought any consultation for the preparation of a comprehensive immigration policy and management of the issue of refugees and asylum seekers.
The migration and refugee issue must be a priority for the government, but perceived through a human-centred approach to solve the multiple problems faced by refugees and immigrants in our country. The need to take measures is urgent so as to ensure effective protection, dignified living and their equal integration by making use of the relevant European programs.
