The government should realize that it is corruption not its revelation that is undermining the state
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 31st August 2020, Nicosia
Cyprus is being shamed and vilified all over the world, but the government pretends that it doesn’t understand the problem being provoked to our country and its economy.
Instead of taking on its responsibilities, as the European Commission requests, and clearing the name of Cyprus so that our country can attract serious investments, the government continues to confine itself to the communication management and manipulation of public opinion.
It continues to react to the denunciations and revelations and its approaches anything but show a government that is determined to dismantle a corrupt and non-transparent system which was set up around the “golden passports” scheme.
In general, the government is not performing well on matters related to interwoven interests and corruption. It is no coincidence that during the term of the Anastasiades-DISY government, Cyprus is falling down in the relevant international tables.
The government must realize that it is corruption, and not the revelation of corruption, that is undermining the state and our country, but also the economy itself. The country and economy need legitimate and clean investments, which produce added value and provide benefits for the many and not the privileged few.
The government is called upon to at long last put the interests of Cyprus above any other interests.
