The government ruling forces are insensitive

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 28 March 2019

We salute last night’s mass protest march on the collapse of the Cyprus Cooperative Bank. Society and citizens are protesting and reacting to the big crime committed by the government ruling forces in closing down the Co-op Bank, which for a century represented the common people’s mainstay of support in society. The government ruling forces have closed down this bastion in a calculated way.

The message conveyed by last night’s mass public protest is very clear: The government ruling forces are guilty of committing this enormous economic and social crime, as this has already been recorded in a clear way by the Finding of the investigation which the government is not only ignoring, but also rejecting. At the same time, they are attacking the Investigation Committee that drafted the Finding in an arrogant and insulting manner.

The government ruling forces, therefore, bear severe responsibilities and must take them on. A minimal assumption of responsibility would be the resignation or dismissal of the Minister of Finance. We have no illusions that the government ruling forces will assume their responsibilities. They haven’t accustomed us to having such thoughtfulness, nor sensitivity. They are merciless and senseless in taking on their responsibilities also as regards what society requests and demands. The government does not take on its responsibility on any matter and all it does is either conceal them or try to shift them on to others. Society however has woken up to them and people are no longer being fooled by the games of the government and all those who join in these games.
