The government must take on its responsibilities
AKEL on serious allegations of arbitrariness and negligence regarding the Akamas peninsula
28 August 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The events of recent days, involving the organization of a private party without a permit and with the use of sound and lighting equipment, as pointed out in the Auditor General’s Report, confirm what AKEL has been denouncing for some time in relation to abuses in the protected area of the Akamas region. The protection of the Akamas peninsula is non-negotiable, and all competent authorities have an obligation not only to comply with existing legislation, but also to take all the necessary measures for the safeguarding of our natural heritage. It is imperative that the issue be investigated thoroughly, and that those responsible for what has happened be identified and held accountable.
The government, and in particular the relevant Ministry, has been assuring us for almost two years that the decrees for the protected areas will be issued, but they are still pending.
The government bears full responsibility for the inaction and arbitrariness that is taking place in Akamas. The competent authorities must take on their responsibilities and proceed to take all the necessary measures to restore, protect, and preserve Akamas.
